This brand was inspired by and created on a move back home (to Africa). A Black American decided to move to Africa. Every item listed in this shop is Made In Africa. Each item represents personally united between Africa and Diaspoans. There’s a little bit of everyone included in the brand so inclusivity and inclusion are central to Ifunanya.
Ifunanya is a Nigerian Igbo name. “Ifunanya” translates to “love” in English. It literally means “to see in the eyes” or “to see eye to eye,” suggesting a deep and intimate connection. The Igbo concept of love, as represented by Ifunanya, extends beyond the simple English word, encompassing a deeper sense of connection and affection.
The brand owner is Daniella Marie otherwise known as Daniella The Explorer. She decided to journey back to Africa and get very familiar with the cultures on the ground (If you know Daniella you know she takes this part VERY seriously LOL). As a Black American living through all the racial, socioeconomical, classist, and gender divides and mass tensions in America, she decided to visit and eventually relocate to Africa. Specifically to Nigeria. This has truly felt like “Coming Home”.
So from this relocation born the influencer Brand Thee New Nigerian. While living amongst the local Nigerians Daniella developed a love for the fashions and vibrancy she was witnessing being expressed through local clothing. While she appreciated it was very difficult to always get the items to fit the style she was used to and would want to wear. She then decided to make clothes that merge the absolute best of both worlds. It has the style, convenience, and utility of Nigeria with the Diasporan journey and cultures in mind. From this Shop Ifunanya was born.
Shop Ifunanya was founded in Lagos, Nigeria, in 2024 and officially registered in 2025. Its story is intertwined with the beginnings of “Thee New Nigerian”, a journey that started with a Black American who had done everything ‘right. I went to school. Got good grades, had a good career and just felt burnt out. Participated in the Great Migration, The Great Resignation, and the Finding Myself and Finding Joy Movement. This journey led to moving to Africa and creating a space for a Black American to merge with African roots. From this journey came the path to passion for fashion and Shop Ifunanya.
